Artist Statement

A beautiful object can take us out of the rush of practical life into another reality. It is a necessary part of ordinary life. My intention is to make an object that will connect me to another person through non-verbal communication, thus establishing a relationship between the maker and the viewer.

I enjoy the process of working with wet clay, knowing that every movement of my hands and fingers will affect it. I begin working with a thought, and I watch it take shape in the clay, often taking on a deeper meaning. Sometimes the process takes me off onto a tangent never imagined, but the process of turning an idea into a tangible object is what becomes important.

My work is about ideas, textures, and contrasts. Sometimes the ideas come from literary reference. Sometimes they are pulled from passing comments overheard. The textures are what I see and feel when I’m walking in nature – the smoothness of a rock or the roughness of a muddy hillside. The contrasts are conceptual and visual - the contrast of what is on the inside of something as opposed to what is on the outside – rough/smooth, light/dark, good/bad. Many times the contrast is more subtle.
